Dark Shadows is a monstrously clever story, set in 1972, about Vampires, Witches and other weird creatures as members of the Collins family. They live in Collinsport Manor which looks like something out of the Adams Family home. This is a wonderful Tim Burton/Johnny Depp movie that explores the relationships between Barnabus Collins (Johnny Depp) as a vampire and Angelique (Eva Green) a witch who has cursed him and leaves him buried and chained for 200 years. His mistake in the past was falling in love with Josette Du Pres (Bella Heathcote), wounding Angelique with disastrous results. The emphasis on witty lines and great gags spring from the bloodsucker fish-out-of-water status of a vampire who's been sleeping since 1750. When Angelique arrives the action turns wild as she tries to punish Barnabus for his profligate behaviour with other women. The one individual who provides a link throughout is an eccentric Willie Loomis (Jackie Earl Haley) who attempts to keep the house running in spite of the ongoing crises that threaten to destroy the family. The movie has been inspired by a Gothic soap opera from the late 60’s that has received the Tim Burton treatment.
